Come ti è sorta l'idea?

Hello Simon, thank you for agreeing to answer my questions. I'm happy to host you in my blog .You are well known for a very original task . You make huge drawings on the snow. How did you developed the idea? How did it start?
A Drawing on the ground is a natural thing that people have been doing for thousands of years. People often ask me about the Nasca lines in Peru, but in Britain there are many drawings made by removing grass from fields in Southern England, where the soil is a brilliant white due to the chalk, a very soft rock as seen in the White cliffs of Dover. Snow drawings are also frequently made by teenagers, particularly around Valentine's day, and another popular design amongst the young is inspired by one of England's ancient chalk drawings, the Giant of Cerne Abbas. So I dont really claim to have invented snow art.
Anyway, one evening in December 2004, after the chairlifts had closed in the ski resort where I spend most of the winter, I felt the need to get a bit of gentle exercise, and decided to fetch my surveying compass and draw a simple star on the snow covered frozen lake outside the building where I stay. That was fun, so I filled in the "wasted" space with circles, to use up the available area, and sure enough, next day it looked impressive from the nearby chair lift. Too bad I didnt realise I was onto something big. I would have bought a decent camera and by now would have enough good photos for the coffee table book I have been promising people for a few years.
It took, a while for the snow drawing to become a major activity. I regarded it as a frivolous activity that diverted time and toil away from more important things (at the time I was a serious competitive orienteering expert and doing a lot of trail running) and the police once asked me what I was doing and the people working in the resort regarded me as a silly foll who was going to get himself killed sooner rather than later. When I bought a digital camera in 2006 I decided to build up a collection of photos of snow drawings and put them on the internet. This was inspired by the occasional outstanding contributions some people have made to the internet, particularly the climber Guillaume Dargaud (www.gdargaud.net) and I wanted to creat something equally outstanding, or even better (my natural competitiveness coming to the fore).
In 2009, when the problems in my great toe joint progressed to the point where I could no longer run properly I decided to make the snow drawing my main wintertime activity and in 2011 I spent 4 weeks out of action recovering from an operation, I set things up on facebook, and that was when things really took off.

What were your first drawings?
A All things being equal I make the easiest design I have not already made and got good photos of. So I started with stars (which are very simple as all one has to do is plot a number of equidistant points from the centre, then moved on to simple fractals (made by repeating a simple rule at different scales) and other geometrical shapes. I have attempted a few pictures, but they are time consuming and consensus has been the geometrical shapes work best. 80 percent of the drawings are variations and combinations of Koch snowflakes, Mandelbrot sets, Sierpinski triangles and stars. A few are copies of crop circles.

How were you inspired to create these designs?
Just as I remember in great detail my first orienteering event, in 1969, so I remember my first snow drawing. It was after skiing shortly after I drove to Arc2000 with the intention of spending the winter in the apartment I had bought there, It was a fine evening, the mountains looked magnificent, I felt too tired to hike up the nearby Aiguille Rouge and neither did I feel like going for a run, but I wanted to do something outdoors, and the idea occurred to me to draw something on the snow covered frozen lake outside the building that contains my apartment. I get asked where I got the idea from but drawing on the ground is a natural thing that people have been doing for thousands of years. In Britain there are many drawings made by removing grass from fields in Southern England, where the soil is a brilliant white due to the chalk, a very soft rock as seen in the White cliffs of Dover. Snow drawings are also frequently made by teenagers, particularly around Valentine's day, and another popular design amongst the young is inspired by one of England's ancient chalk drawings, the Giant of Cerne Abbas. So I thought I would give it a go, the lake is about 2/3 the area of a soccer field, and was absolutely untracked snow, and to my mind, it seemed purpose made for a drawing, so I fetched my surveying compass and walked into the middle on a straight line then added the remaining 4 straight lines linking the points of what was to be a 5 pointed star to the middle. I still remember walking between the points and then shading the figure by walking parallel to the first track, and debating with myself w hether to cross the tracks I had already made or do the shading one triangle at a time (I did the former, as I was wearing hiking boots and not snow shoes) and whether to shade all of it or stop when I had done about 8 laps. That was fun, so I filled in the "wasted" space with circles, to use up the available area, and sure enough, next day it looked impressive from the nearby chair lift. I still remember the French lady who was sitting beside me remarking "Superbe, c'est une fleur " and I didnt admit to having created it! Looking back, 11 years later, of course I regret not having taking this thing seriously from that day onwards but at the time I did not own a digital camera, neither did I have snow shoes (I only bought a pair 2 years later when they were on offer) and I was still taking orientering seriously and regarded drawing as low grade exercise when one ought to be running or training in a more strenuous way, and people would tell me not to walk on the frozen lake in case the ice broke. Stage 2 was after buying a digital camera and snow shoes (raquettes), and I would take photos of the drawings then have fun with photoshop, increasing the contrast, changing the colours etc. There was still no internet in Arc2000 other than by paying €5 per hour to use a computer in a pub with loud pop music, so it was entirely for my own amusement.
Instructors and resort workers still regarded me as the local nutcase and I tried to keep a low profile and all the photography was for my own amusement. Stage 3 was when I started putting photos on the internet, inspired my a few individuals who had contributed something outstanding to the internet, and there were concepts such as world peace and saving the environment involved, showing people photos of beautiful mountains, preserve the nature etc. Stage 4 was when I decided to stop orienteering partly because the sport has become urbanised, and partly due to the problem with my feet. The toe jjoints are worn out and the best thing for them is to exercise in a maner that does not involve bending them. Strapping my boots into a rigid snow shoe (raquette) is good for them, and I decided to make the snow drawing my main form of exercise in winter and make as many drawings as possible. Stage 5 was after putting photos on facebook, and that was when things really got going as people started sharing photo.

1) la misurazione accurata utilizzando una bussola di rilevamento e il conteggio dei passi, che è esattamente come fare le mappe, utilizzando le stesse competenze;
2) è l'aggiunta di linee rimanenti al disegno , collegando i punti che sono stati contrassegnati in fase 1;
3) infine c'è l'ombreggiatura delle aree all'interno delle linee.

Can you explain us how your work develops?
Is there an initial drawing, calculation of the measurement and an appraisal of the time it could take Once I have decided what to draw it takes 1-2 hours to draw it (or enough of it) on paper and make some measurements and write them down, to speed things up once I get outdoors. Once on the mountain there are 3 stages:
1) the careful measuring using compass bearing and pace counting, which is exactly like mapmaking backwards, using the same skills as for making maps;
2) is adding the remaining lines to the drawing by linking points that were marked in stage 1;
3) finally there is the shading of the areas and rewalking the lines.

Which tools do you use ? What do you wear on your feet? Do you use any other equipment?
Just ordinary snowshoes. A compass and rope and anchor for accurate circles when necessary.

On average, how long does it take for you to draw? How many can you make during winter? Have you been able to count all of your works?
That depends on the size of the site. Most of the preferred sites are one day for a good drawing then if the good weather continues I will make it larger. So I make the largest I can in the "weather window".   In a good winter about 30. I think the total is 210 although the does not include a few small demo drawings.

Have you always been able to complete your work or have you ever been interrupted by something? If so, could you tell us the anedocte?
The worst was when after 20 hours spread over 3 days the sky clouded over and I failed to get a good photo of the finished drawing. I should have gone up and taken a photo of the nearly-complete drawing before I had finished. The decision on when to start a drawing is taken according to the weather forecast, so inevitable there will be a proportion of failures.

The ski resort of Les Arcs, in the French Alps is the place where y ou made the most of your work. You worked in Banff National Park, in Canada and even in siberi, whwew you made a drawing for a Russian film. Where wold you like to go which you have no visit yet?Do you think we will ever have the honour to admire your drawings on our Italian mountains ?
A huge number of places I would love to. There are super locations in the area of Cortina, in particular the 2 lakes near the rifugio 3 cime in the Sextener Dolomiti

Which are the best weather conditions to make your drawings?
If I could control the weather I would ask for 3 fine days separated by a major snowfall.

I don’t think there is anyone else at the moment doing the work that you do. Which advices would you give to anyone interested in following your footsteps?
Start by learning how to use an orientereing compass and practice distance measurement by pace counting, then practicing the Sierpinski triangle, that is simple.

Fortunately , you got the brilliant idea to publish a book with a large selection of photographs of your masterpieces . Can you talk a bit about it? Where is it possible to buy it?
There is a website snowart.gallery. The book has 168 pages and they are selling it for €25 . It contains the best of the images that I had good photos of (early work had to be rejected as I was using cheap cameras) but drawings i made after the end of winter 2014 have not been included. (Those will of course be in the 2nd book).

No, evito qualsiasi sorta di danno criminale.

Finally , are you willing to reveal that you are also the author of the circles on the grain ? :-)
No, I avoid that sort of criminal damage. If they obtained permission from the farmer then that would be OK and I might get involved.

Our time is over , Simon . I wish you luck and I hope , to soon see your designs on the snow of our mountains in Cortina .
