È un piacere incontrarti, Andrew. Ho avuto la fortuna di ascoltarti suonare ad Alexanderplatz e ne sono rimasta molto colpita. Da quanto tempo sei innamorato della musica? Quali strumenti suoni?
Grazie di cuore per il complimento. È bello sentirsi apprezzati. Ho iniziato a cantare da bambino, cosa che immagino facciano moltissimi musicisti. Ho iniziato a suonare il piano a 11 anni e poi, a 17, sono passato alla chitarra. Ora ho 22 anni, quindi si può dire che sono 20 anni che sono innamorato della musica.
It’s a pleasure to meet you, Andrew. I got the chance to listen to your outstanding music in Alexanderplatz and got stuck. How long have you been in love with music? What instruments do you play?
First of all, thank you very much for the lovely compliment. It's nice to be appreciated once in a while. I've been singing since I was a child, which I think is something that most musicians have in common. I started playing piano when I was 11 and I moved on to guitar when I was 17. I'm 22 now so I suppose I've been in love with music for about 20 years, or for as long as I can remember anyway.
Suonare in strada significa dover suonare hit. La gente si ferma ad ascoltarti se suoni una buona cover di una qualche canzone conosciuta. Come personalizzi questi pezzi? Cosa ti porta a scegliere una canzone specifica?
Non credo sia necessario suonare cover. Negli anni, ho cambiato idea circa la street music. Sono 5 anni che suono in strada e quando ho iniziato suonavo pezzi acustici, senza amplificazione, quindi dovevo suonare cose più “rumorose” o “aggressive”. Sceglievo canzoni che mi veniva spontaneo urlare, ovvero cose che per me avevano un significato emotivo. Per me era più importante quello, anziché scegliere una hit conosciuta.
A un certo punto, ho imparato a suonare le hit, perché... è quello che gli artisti di strada fanno. Ma era difficile, o meglio, non mi divertivo. Non avevo un legame con quella canzone e il pubblico si accorgeva che suonavo mal volentieri.
Alla fine, sono arrivato dove sono oggi, in uno stadio in cui sono felice della mia musica e metto passione nelle cose che canto e scrivo. Suonare le mie canzoni mi fa sentire bene e, se suono una cover, è sempre una canzone che amo, non necessariamente “famosa”.
Playing in the streets means playing hits. People stop to listen to you if you’re singing a good cover of some song they know. How do you “personalize” other artists’songs? Why do you choose a particular song?
I don't think it's necessary to play covers. My attitude towards street music has changed over the years. I've been doing it for 5 years, and when I started I would play acoustically, no amplification, so I had to play songs which were a bit louder, a bit more aggressive, and I chose songs which felt good to shout about, things which were personal to me that I could get angry, or sad, or just passionate about, that was more important to me than choosing a “hit” that people were familiar with.
At a certain point I learned all the hits because, well, most street musicians do, it's just one of those things, but I found that it was so much more difficult to enjoy myself If I didn't have a personal connection to the song, and that was counterintuative because people could tell that I really wasn't feeling it.
Eventually I progressed to a point where I'm proud of my own music, and I feel strongly about the things I write about, I'm confident enough to play my own music on the street and If I do choose to play a cover, it's always a song that I love, not necessarily a popular song.
Componi e hai anche registrato un CD. Di cosa parlano le tue canzoni?
Praticamente tutto quello che scrivo parla di amore. Non so darne una motivazione, ma per me è spontaneo. A volte mi sento un po’ egocentrico, perché ci sarebbero altre cose di cui cantare, ma non credo che la mia opinione farebbe la differenza in quei campi. In più, vengo da una cultura in cui è sempre meglio tenere le proprie opinioni per se stessi. Magari un giorno scriverò di politica, o di violenza, o di religione, o di uguaglianza. Ma fino a che non sarà un cambiamento spontaneo, continuerò a cantare di amore.
You’re a songwriter as well and you even recorded your own CD. What are the songs about?
Almost every song I write is about love. I'm not exactly sure why but it's something that's easy for me to write about. Sometimes I feel a little bit shallow or narcissistic because there are other things I care about, but I just don't really think my opinion matters on many of these things, and I come from a culture where it was always better to keep your opinion to yourself. Maybe one day I'll get over that and write some political songs, or songs about abuse, or religion, or equality, but until I feel comfortable with my own voice on those subjects, I'll just stick to love.
Quanto tempo hai impiegato per scriverle?
È una cosa che cambia molto da canzone a canzone, il tempo che impiego. A volte scrivo la musica, o le parole, e non riesco a finire. Altre volte impiego un quarto d’ora.
Non so come descrivere il procedimento creativo, ma dipende dal mio umore, credo. Il mio CD, Homesick, è stato scritto in una settimana dopo una storia finita male e un weekend di alcol.
How long did it take you to write them?
It varies greatly from song to song as well, I have music for songs, or lyrics from songs which aren't finished, which I've been trying to write since I was 15, and sometimes I can write a song in 5 minutes, practically writing as I play it.
I'm not sure how to describe my creative process but it definitely depends on my mood.
My current CD for example, was written in a week in my bedroom after a bad breakup and a heavy weekend of drinking so maybe that's the key?
Sei scozzese. Perché hai scelto di trasferirti a Berlino? Da quanto tempo sei in Germania?
Per capire perché ho scelto Berlino, bisogna capire da dove vengo. È una città minuscola vicino Glasgow ed è complicato rendere l’idea di com’è – una mentalità ristretta. Non mi sono mai sentito a mio agio e non ho mai voluto conformarmi all’idea di lavoro-matrimonio-bambini-muori.
Era quella l’idea di “vita normale”, nel posto in cui vivevo. Quindi, non appena ho potuto, ho iniziato a viaggiare. Sono stato in Europa: Belgio, Francia, Spagna, Danimarca, e poi sono arrivato qui. È l’opposto del posto da cui vengo.
Le persone sono incredibili e nessuno si aspetta nulla da te. È pieno di artisti che vivono come vogliono e tutto ha il sapore di novità. È bellissimo e in 2 o 3 giorni mi sono innamorato. È successo 4 anni fa. Dovevo tornare a casa, ma dopo due anni sono ritornato qui. E intendo restare.
You’re from Scotland. Why did you move to Berlin? How long have you been living in Germany?
I think, to understand why I chose Berlin, you have to understand a little bit about the place where I come from. It's a small town, just outside of Glasgow, and it's hard to describe exactly how it is to someone who hasn't been somewhere similar but I think the best expression would be “closed minded”. I never felt comfortable where I grew up and I never felt like subscribing to societies definition of a normal life (get a job, get married, buy a house; car; dog; have kids etc, save money, go on holiday, spend all the money, finally pay your mortgage, save more money, grow old having worked your whole life and die).
At least, that's what normal is, where I'm from, so when I finally got the chance to travel, I took it immediately.
I travelled to a few places in Europe, Belgium, France, Spain, Denmark, and when I came to Berlin it was almost like arriving in a place that was the complete opposite of where I'm from.
The people here are amazing, they don't have these expectations of you. This place is full of artists, doing whatever the hell they want, whenever they want, and that was completely new for me. It was refreshing, so I fell in love within 2 or 3 days and never wanted to leave - that was 4 years ago, and I did leave, but I came back to stay permenantly about 2 years ago.
Penso che viaggiare sia una delle cose più importanti della vita e, se posso dare un consiglio a tutti, è smettetela di fare quello che state facendo!, prendete un aereo e andare a esplorare il mondo.
Non so spiegarti quanto sia importante, ma so che insegna a capire le altre persone, a capire se stessi e il proprio posto nel mondo. Insegna come crescere in quanto essere umano e ad avere rispetto per gli altri.
Credo sia anche importante non concentrarsi sulel cose materiali, in modo da dare valore alle piccole cose, quelle che mi fanno stare bene davvero.
Per me ha un valore immenso l’avere un tetto sopra la testa, avere una famiglia che mi ama, degli amici, il mio tempo libero e la musica, perché mi fa vivere la vita come voglio.
Do you think travelling is an important part of life? What things do you value in your life?
I think travelling is one of the most important things anyone can do in their whole life, and if there's one piece of advice I can give to anyone, it's to stop what you're doing right now, take some time off, and see the world.
I can't explain the value of it properly but it teaches you so much about other people, and most importantly about yourself and your place in the world. It helps you learn how to grow as a person, and how to treat other people properly.
I also think it's important not to concentrate on material things, so I value the simple things, and the things that I enjoy.
I value having a roof over my head, having a family who loves me and friends who are loyal, I value my free time a lot, because I enjoy wasting it, and I value music obviously since it's given me the opportunity to live my life the way that I want it.
Hai un sogno?
Non sono ambizioso, ma sì, ho dei sogni. Vorrei suonare le mie canzoni davanti a migliaia di persone che le apprezzino e sentirli cantare con me. Vorrei supportare le persone con la mia musica, essere “terapeutico” e aiutare tutti coloro che attraversano un momento no, perché è questo il senso della musica. Vorrei ripagare la musica restituendole quello che lei dà a me. E vorrei farlo su un palco vero.
Do you have a dream?
I have very few ambitions, but I would be lying if I said I didn't have dreams.
I'd like to play my music in front of thousands of people, feel appreciated and have them sing the words back at me. I'd like to be a voice of support for people, who could use my music as a kind of therapy to help them through hard times, because that's what music is for me. I'd like to be able to give it back, and not just on the street you know? On a stage, a big one.
Cosa vorresti dire al mondo?
Sorridete ogni giorno, vogliatevi bene, siate sempre gentili, chiamate la vostra famiglia e dite loro che li amate, non dimenticate i loro compleanni e date qualche soldo agli artisti di strada, soprattutto se vi sembra che si stiano divertendo.
What would you like to tell to the whole world?
Smile every day, Love each other, Be kind to everyone, Call your family every so often to tell them you love them, and don't forget their birthdays, and most importantly give money to street musicians, especially if they look like they're having fun.
