Laura Dekker. Una barca, tanta tenacia, spirito d'avventura, un po' di pazzia e curiosità. A oggi, la più giovane velista ad aver completato il giro del mondo via mare in solitaria. 

Cercando in internet le parole "giro del mondo" ho trovato il sito di Laura Dekker e ho letto la sua fantastica storia. Lei riflette perfettamente lo spirito del nostro contest Il giro del mondo in 80 giorni 2.0, così le ho scritto una mail per chiederle un'intervista. Laura è stata così gentile da rispondere e parlare della sua meravigliosa esperienza di viaggio intorno al mondo.
Laura è nata su una barca, nel 1995, in Nuova Zelanda, mentre i suoi genitori stavano navigando per il mondo. Dunque, possiamo asserire che la navigazione e il mare siano nel suo DNA. Fin da bambina sente di essere nata per viaggiare in barca e non per stare sulla terra ferma. All'età di 14 anni decide di intraprendere un viaggio intorno al mondo ma il Tribunale dei Minori olandese prova a fermarla. Proprio prima del suo quindicesimo compleanno, Laura va in aula e convince i giudici di essere capace di navigare attorno al mondo da sola. L'ardua battaglia legale di Laura è stata complicata ma non ha mai smesso di inseguire i suoi sogni e ha continuato a prepararsi per il suo viaggio di circumnavigazione. E ce l'ha fatta! Il suo viaggio ha inizio il 21 agosto del 2010...

Googling “travel the world” I read about Laura Dekker and her amazing story. She reflects the spirit of our contest “Il giro del mondo in 80 giorni 2.0”, so I wrote her an email asking for an interview. She has been so kind to say yes and here we are talking about her and her marvellous sail trip around world. 
First of all, I have to introduce Laura to those who have never heard about her: she was born on a boat, in 1995, in the New Zealand sea, while her parents were sailing around the world. So we can assume she has the sailing and the sea in her DNA. Since she was a child, she felt to be born to sail the world and not to stay on the ground. At the age of 14 she decided to make a round trip of the world but the Dutch Council for Child Care tried to stop her departure. Just before her 15th birthday, she went to court in the Netherlands convincing the judges she was capable of sailing around the world unaided. Laura’s arduous court battle was a complicated one but she never stop following her dreams and continued preparing her global circumnavigation trip. And she made it! Her journey began on the 21st of August 2010...

"Always prepare well for your trips, but you have to leave at the moment your preparations start to become an excuse to not leave yet". 

Ciao Laura e grazie per averci dato la possibilità di chiacchierare con te. Come ho scritto sopra, ti sei sempre dimostrata una bambina con un particolare interesse verso il mare. Quando hai capito che eri fatta per navigare e viaggiare invece di andare a scuola o avere un lavoro regolare?

Non ci ho mai realmente pensato. Sono cresciuta con il mare e l'ho sempre amato. Per me navigare era (e sempre è) la cosa più normale del mondo. Non ho mai pensato di navigare al posto di andare a scuola, semplicemente volevo combinare le due cose per studiare sia le materie scolastiche che il mondo. Di fatti, ho continuato a studiare mentre ero in mare.

Hi Laura and thank you so much for giving us the chance to talk to you. As I wrote here above, you’ve always been a special child with a special interest in the sea. When did you realize for the first time that you were made for sailing and not for going to school and do a regular job?

I never really thought about it, I grew up with sailing and have always loved it. For me it was (and still is) the most normal thing in the world. I never thought I should sail rather then going to school but wanted to combine the two to learn both my schoolwork and about the world. I did continue to do my schoolwork while sailing around the world. 

Abbiamo raccontato il tuo viaggio ma ci piacerebbe sapere la ragione della tua scelta. Perché hai deciso di partire da sola, a soli 14 anni?

Semplicemente ho pensato "perché no?".  Sono cresciuta navigando e sapevo cosa stessi facendo anche se ero una ragazzina, giovane e piccola. Avevo già alcuni anni alle spalle di solida esperienza e pratica. Non volevo piegarmi al sistema e avere persone che decidessero per me, cosa avrei dovuto fare. Amavo viaggiare per mare e ero desiderosa di vedere il resto del mondo, esplorare, incontrare nuove persone e navigare verso nuovi orizzonti. Questo è quello che volevo e ho capito che era meglio farlo il prima possibile A 13 anni avevo una barca, un po' di soldi, pratica ed esperienza. Non vedevo nessuna ragione per non partire.

We briefly explained what your sailing trip was about but we’d like to know the reason of your choice. Why did you choose to sail the world on your own, when you were just 14?

I just thought "why not?". I had grown up with sailing and really knew what I was doing even though  I was a girl, very little and young. I already had a few years of solid experience and practice behind me. I didn't like sitting in the system, having people choosing for me what I should do. I loved sailing and was very eager to see the rest of the world, to explore, meet new people and sail to distant horizons. That's what I wanted and figured it was better to do it earlier then later. At 13 I had a boat, a little bit of money saved and practice and experience. I saw no reason to not go. 

Puoi raccontarci cosa hai sentito il giorno in cui hai lasciato l'Europa con la tua barca per iniziare ad avventurarti nel mondo?

Io ero spaventata, eccitata, sola, felice, molto triste, era un giorno bello e assolutamente perfetto. Era un turbinio di emozioni. Non potrei descriverle completamente tutte. Ma è stato di sicuro il giorno più felice e eccitante della mia vita!

Can you tell us what you felt the day you left Europe with your boat to start venturing the world?

It was scary, exiting, lonely, absolutely perfect, beautiful, happy, yet sad. It was such a jumble of emotions. I couldn't completely describe it all to you. But it was for sure one of the happiest and most exiting days in my life! 

Adesso facci sognare! Fai una lista dei paesi che hai visitato durante questo viaggio. Il tuo itinerario è stato pianificato in anticipo o è stato qualcosa che hai deciso passo dopo passo?

Ho pianificato il mio viaggio con molta attenzione prima di partire, ma è molto importante anche essere aperti e flessibili durante il viaggio. Io ho cambiato il mio itinerario un paio di volte, apportando a volte grandi cambiamenti altre invece piccoli. Dunque: ho lasciato l'Europa e ho navigato verso sud fino alle Isole Canarie e a Capo Verde. Ho proseguito verso St. Martin, attraversando i Caraibi fino al Canale di Panama (Mi sono fermata molto lungo il cammino ma sarebbe una lista lunga se scrivessi ogni singolo posto dove ho approdato). Da Panama sono arrivata alle Galapagos poi Marquesas - Polinesia Francese - Tonga - Isole Fiji - Vanuatu - Darwin - Sud Africa - ancora Caribbean and poi passando di nuovo dal Canale di Panama e toccando altre isole sono giunta in Nuova Zelanda.

Now, let's dream together! Make a list of all the place you went during this sailing trip so that we have an idea of your itinerary. Was it planned and studied months before or it’s something you decided step by step?

I did plan out my trip carefully before I left, but it is very important to still be open and flexible along the way. I had to change my course a few times, sometimes big changes other times just small things :) So I left Europe, sailed south to Canary island and Cape verde, sailed to St. Martin then down along the Caribbean islands and onto the Panama Canal (I stopped a lot along the way but it would be way to much to write every single stop down). From Panama to Galapagos - Marquesas - French Polynesia - Tonga - Fiji - Vanuatu - Darwin - South Africa - Caribbean and then on to panama canal again and via some of the islands to New Zealand. 

So che molte persone hanno provato a fermarti ma tu hai continuato a viaggiare, seguendo il tuo sogno, nonostante tutto. 

Tu sei stata e, sono certa, sei ancora una persona determinata. Ma parlando di problemi tecnici: ci sono state difficoltà e momenti ardui durante il viaggio?

Certamente ci sono stati momenti difficili, in ogni sforzo che sia grande o piccolo ci sono. La sfida più grande era che fossi davvero sola la maggior parte del tempo e non potessi chiedere l'aiuto di nessuno, nel caso qualcosa si fosse rotto o fosse andato storto. Ma tutto questo mi ha fatto imparare molto di più e più rapidamente. Ho semplicemente continuato a viaggiare e riparato le cose che si rompevano, crescendo velocemente e imparando rapidamente.

I know that during your trip lots of people tried to stop you and you kept going, following your dream no matter what. You have been and, am sure, still are a purposeful person. But speaking about technical problems: were there any difficulties and hard moments during this trip? 

Of course there are always hard moments, in any endeavour whether it is small or big. My biggest challenge was that I was really very much on my own and couldn't ask for help if things broke or went wrong, but that made me learning things much quicker. I simply had to keep going and repair things. It made me grow up and learn a lot faster. 

Ci racconti qualche storia sui posti che hai visitato?

Ogni posto ha cose belle e cose brutte, c'era sempre qualcosa che mi piaceva in ogni posto che ho visto. Le mie isole preferite sono quelle della Polinesia Francese. Sono molto belle e se ti allontani dalle grandi città le persone sono incredibilmente amichevoli. Fa comunque differenza sapere se in un posto vuoi viverci o no. Non credo mi piacerebbe vivere lì perché si tratta di isole troppo piccole e a me piace viaggiare. Adesso vivo in Nuova Zelanda, paese che mi calza a pennello. Il mare qua è perfetto e le persone sono gentili. Inoltre, è anche un bellissimo paese.

Can you tell us some stories about a few places you visited?

Every place has its good and bad things, there was something i liked everywhere. My favorite islands are the French Polynesian islands. They are very beautiful and if you get away from bigger cities the people are incredibly friendly. It also makes a big difference whether you want to live in a place or not. I don't think I would like to live there, because it's too small and I like to travel. I now live in New Zealand which suits me very well, the sailing is great and the people are nice. It is also a very beautiful country.

Com'è adesso la tua vita? 

So che ti sei sposata e hai deciso di vivere in Nuova Zelanda. So che vivi su una barca in Whangarei's Quayside Town Basin, il posto in cui sei nata. Cosa fai per vivere? C'è un altro obbiettivo che ti sei prefissata di raggiungere?

Sì, vivo in Nuova Zelanda. A volte faccio consegne di yacths per alcune persone con mio marito. Altre volte faccio attività per programmi all'aria aperta con alcune scuole locali della zona, alcune presentazioni e lavori in barca, un mix di cose, insomma. Sto cercando di trovare una barca più grande e spero di portare le persone, anche bambini e teenagers, in mare per mostrare loro quanto magnifici siano gli oceani  e quante cose si possano imparare da essi.

How is your life now? I know you got married and decided to live in New Zealand and you are living on your boat in Whangarei's Quayside Town Basin, the place you were born. What do you do for a living and is there another goal you want to achieve?

Yes, I do. Sometimes I do delivery of yachts for people together with my husband. Sometimes I do a few things for the outdoor program with a local school here, some presentations and working on boats in between so really a mixture of things. I am trying to find another bigger boat to hopefully take people and maybe even kids/teenager out sailing showing them how magnificent the oceans are and how much there is to learn from it.

C'è qualcosa che vorresti dire a quelli che si sentono come te, quelli che devono viaggiare per il mondo in un modo o nell'altro, a quelli che non riescono a stare fermi nello stesso posto per più di un mese?

Andate! Nessun posto è perfetto, ma ci sono persone ovunque - che siano buone e cattive non è importante. C'è abbastanza cibo, acqua e luoghi in cui ripararsi ovunque, e non abbiamo davvero bisogno di altro. Non abbiate paura di andare. Aspettatevi momenti difficili e scomodi, ma anche di essere meravigliati e di imparare UN SACCO! Preparatevi sempre bene per i vostri viaggi, ma partite nel momento in cui le preparazioni diventano una scusa per rimandare la partenza...

What would you like to say to those who feel like you feel, those who feel they have to travel the world in a way or another, those who cannot stay in a place for more than a months? 

Just go :) No place is perfect, but there is people everywhere - good and bad ones it really doesn't matter where you are. There is pretty much food, water and shelter everywhere, and we really don't need much more than that. So don't be afraid to go. Expect to have hard times and be uncomfortable, but also to be amazed and learn A LOT! :)
